We spoke with interior designers for advice on shopping for a bed frame based on your personal needs. Below is a list of the best places to shop for bed frames and options, from midcentury-modern platforms to upholstered, tufted styles.

Every interior designer we spoke to cited Wayfair as an excellent resource for bed frames on a budget, thanks to its vast inventory (including pieces from sister brands AllModern and Joss & Main) that can be filtered by price.

After hours of research and based on our own experience with these retailers, we picked the best places to shop for bed frames. We assessed them based on their styles, reliability, and range of prices.

We also consulted interior designers Rasheeda Gray of Gray Space Interiors, Havenly interior designer Brady Burke, and Whitney Jones of Whitney J Decor to learn more about purchasing durable and stylish bed frames.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: In September 2021, Blu Dot increased their warranty from a one-year warranty to a five-year warranty, which we think is fantastic. But according to their policy, if you bought a bed frame before that date, you still need to contact them for more information.

Best for: Anyone who likes to elevate their feet or torso while sleeping, which may soothe tired feet. Since this frame is meant to slot inside a regular bed frame, you can try an adjustable base without changing the look of your entire room (just make sure you measure first).

One of the reasons we tested the Max version (as opposed to the less expensive basic base or base pro) was to evaluate the wall-aligning (or wall-hugging) technology in the Max model, something we think is pretty essential to the day-to-day comfort of using these types of frames. The wall-aligning feature allows you to adjust the upper half of the bed independently from the lower half so that it remains at the same distance from the wall (and your nightstand).

Platform bed frames all serve the same purpose: to keep your mattress off the floor. We recommend a number of budget bed frames, too, and any of those will help you create a healthy and comfortable bedroom. But pricier models (including the $800-and-higher models we focus on in this guide) distinguish themselves with their easy assembly and higher-quality materials, including additional supports around the corners and edges, thicker slats, and top-grade upholstery. Subjectively speaking, a higher budget also opens the door to a wider range of design choices. If your budget allows, consider investing a little more in a solidly built, good-looking frame that you can enjoy for decades.

We began by researching bed frames from large home-furnishings retailers, online vendors, and several direct-order brands. We homed in on modern styles because the aesthetic is adaptable to a wide variety of decor schemes and also because the simpler construction makes these beds easier to assemble than more complicated styles. In 2019 we researched 28 models and narrowed down our search to six bed frames. In 2021 one of our editors researched a few more bed frames and added a pick. In 2022 we reassessed our criteria and added two more picks. We looked for the following features:

A standard bed frame is able to hold practically any type of headboard. That means you can spend more time picking out the perfect headboard and less time worrying about whether or not it will even work.

For the sake of convenience, the vast majority of headboards and bed frames are compatible. Frame-mounted headboards create a cohesive aesthetic and are an affordable and simple option for renters and homeowners alike. 2The installation process is straightforward and requires very few tools.

To see if your bed frame is compatible, examine near the head of the bed for headboard brackets. Most bed frames have four horizontally oblong bolt holes or slots arranged one above the other. These pre drilled holes accommodate multiple types of headboard designs and allow you to adjust the height of the headboard.

The other option is a complete bed with the frame integrated with the headboard, footboard, and side rails. This creates a more finished look. The frame is often more decorative since it includes the side rails.

The quality of the material is also important. Solid hardwood is a very sturdy material, but a wooden frame with inferior construction might not hold up as well. For a quality bed, always check what hardware and joinery system is used.

A box spring is a simple support consisting of a wooden/metal frame, filled with metal coils/springs or a metal grid, and wrapped in fabric. They are primarily used for innerspring mattresses. Typically box springs are designed to sit on top of a bed frame.

A platform bed combines both a foundation for your bed as well as a frame to keep it off the ground. Most have wooden legs to elevate the frame, while some include storage drawers reaching down to the ground level. Platform beds offer an all-in-one solution, but they can be pricier than other options.

First, you will need to figure out where the noises are coming from. There are three main possible sources for the noises you are hearing: the mattress itself, the box spring, or the bed frame/foundation.

Most bed frames and foundations are held together by joints, usually connected with metal bolts or screws. These areas are a very common source of squeakiness, so this is a good place to start in trying to prevent excessive noise from your bed.

To start, simply tighten all the joints on your bed frame, using a wrench or screwdriver. You may also consider adding plastic washers to achieve a tighter fit, without the metal-on-metal connection that frequently causes squeaking.

In many cases, noise can be caused by friction between the mattress and the bed frame/foundation. If this is the case, adding a layer of cushioning in between the frame and mattress (or the frame and the box spring) can help. 041b061a72
